Don’t let the extravagantly long name turn you off. Similar to its predecessors, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time dishes out plenty of comedic dialogue, epic boss battles, clever puzzles and, now, breakthrough multi-system interactivity. Read on for my impressions.
Echoes of Time begins similar enough to that of previous Crystal Chronicle titles. After picking a character from one of the four traditional races, you are dropped into the middle of a small and secluded village. Immediately, you are greeted by exuberant villagers who are anticipating your coming of age ceremony – it’s your 16th birthday after all.
Through several conversations you learn that in order to make the transition to adulthood you must venture into the dense forests and overcome a test of sorts. Using your basic combat skills to best small monsters, eventually you come across a boss. Beating the behemoth is much more symbolic than an actual threat, as it goes down easily. The test is now over, and as a reward you are greeted by your mother, who gifts you a small crystal as she sits perched atop one much larger.
