I just realized that I haven’t been keeping up on my regular cosplay exploits outside of posting photoshoots. My bad! It’s been a busy couple of months and in order to play a bit of catch-up I decided to consolidate multiple posts into one – with an emphasis on images. We all know pictures speak louder than words right? Read on to check out my updated Witchblade costume, my first attempt at Poison Ivy and a new costume even I was not expecting to make.
Hope for Henry Superhero Day
This was by far the most satisfying experience I’ve had in costume yet. Hope for Henry is a fantastic organization that provides gifts, programs and support for children in the hospital with life-threatening illnesses. One of their annual events is Superhero Day, which we were invited to be a part of. Basically we spent the afternoon talking with ill kids and their family, helping them design their own capes and traveling from room to room to meet those who couldn’t make their way to us.
Policy wouldn’t allow us to take pictures with the kids (understandably) but we did spend some of our down time taking advantage of the free photo booth at the event. Then we cut up the photos and gave half to the kids complete with our autographs. So while the images below don’t convey the entirety of the event, they are still fun to check out. I can’t wait to do another children’s hospital event!
Marscon 2009
Marscon was held at a hotel in Bloomington back in March. Despite the fact that I don’t really enjoy conventions held at hotels, they do have one thing going for them – room parties! Last year my cosplay group (Superheroes United) whipped together a really impressive Justice League room party, and took home the top prize and a free night stay next year for their efforts. This year they decided to go with a Green Lantern theme. We already had a few members of our group with Green Lantern costumes at that time. Some of us decided to start from scratch, and other decided to make Green Lantern variants of their own characters, such as Superman and Batman.
I wasn’t able to attend Marscon in 2008, so the whole thing was a bit new to me. I was able to find plenty of green snacks and beverages for the event, but putting together a Green Lantern costume on short notice was a bit tougher. I ordered a simple green leotard off of eBay and stuck on the logo with sticky-back felt. I bought a black bodysuit from American Apparel (to avoid any lines across my waist), and picked up the mask and gloves from a local costume store. The boots were borrowed from a friend and the blonde wig was added just for fun! I don’t think the costume turned out bad for the amount of time I had to throw it together.
Marscon was a ton of fun and our group won for best room party again. It will be interesting to see what theme we decide on for next year! Enjoy the pictures!
Microcon 2009
MicroCon is one of two annual Minnesota comic conventions I anticipate attending every year. MicroCon is much shorter than FallCon, lasting only six hours, which may seem a bit short. However, if you are cosplaying, that is MORE than enough time to destroy your feet. I decided to debut my Witchblade costume at the event, as I had only worn it n San Diego prior. I was excited because I added new armor since SDCC. Now the costume has a full breastplate as well as more armor on the face to complete the look. I am still considering adding some to the knees to break apart the massive wash of red. I spent much of the night before the convention gluing felt to line the inside of my chest piece. It is as uncomfortable as it looks and without the felt I would have been bleeding by the end of the event.
Sadly, my long brown wig bit the dust the night before the convention. Good thing my hair is the same color, although much too short to be entirely accurate. I ordered a new wig just this week to ensure that it’s ready when I decide to shoot the costume.
The convention was a ton of fun, as always. A good number of people knew who I was – which is a plus. Seeing as I choose to cosplay fairly obscure characters all the time, it is great to be recognized. Our group was pretty impressive and included the Joker, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, SuperGirl, Wonder Woman, Batman and more.
As far as my haul, I randomly found a Witchblade CD (bizarre right?) and a few Top Cow HeroClix that I had been hunting for. All and all the day was a success! Enjoy the photos!
Free Comic Book Day
Unfortunately, I had to cut FCBD a bit short as I was recovering from being sick. However, I still had fun and managed to pack plenty of action into the day. For three years now I have attended FCBD with my group to help get passersby into The Source Comics and Games – only the best comic book store anywhere. It’s a bit odd but very fun to stand on the corner of a busy intersection and wave while in costume. We had people hooting and hollering and even stopping traffic to take photos.
Many of the ladies in our group have duplicate costumes and we switch off wearing them at different events. I decided to go with Poison Ivy since I had only worn it once at that point. Not many of the kids knew who I was, but their parents seemed to appreciate the costume.
I spent a couple hours walking both inside and out taking photos with customers. I also chatted up the local talent that was signing at the event, and went shopping. And spent too much money on old Vertigo graphic novels. Ugh.
Anyway, we broke and did a quick photoshoot as a group around midday. I will make sure to post those when they make it my way! Till then, check out the ones below!

Fantastic pictures!
And yes, the Green Lantern outfit turned out great for such short notice. But then, I’m sort of biased towards Green (Lanterns).
Glad you approve of the GL duds Alex
